My Little Japanese Chef

Last weekend, missy's image play is about making cold noddles.. she is suppose to use chopstick to eat the cold noddles and feed her mumy..




missy is wearing the chef hat, and apron and busy trying to pick the 'cold noodles' using the chopstick. Using chopstick is part of the motro skill activities that is often practise in class.

she is just so cute in that chef hat.. haa. concentrating while mummy taking her photos..

Board books -gift from Yee Yee

Ordered these two board books online from the Homelibrary. It's suppose to be birthday gift from missy's yee yee.

Our all-time favourite. i used to borrow from library. since sis said ask me to choose books for missy, so i decided to get one instead. board book is smaller in size, and easier to flip for little hand. Good buy. we can bring it along when travelling too. Missy is asking for thie book every night. and she starts to say good night to things in room. cute.

Missy used to like this book when i borrowed from library. But this round, she seems to have less liking to this book. mm.. but, it's a good book to tell her about how a small ceterpillat evolve into a beuatiful butterfly and also day in a week, and food the caterpillar eat daily in increasing numbers.

I think i may get another board book, The bear hunt, which missy loves a lot whenever i borrowed from library.

My Little Honey Bee

Sunday's SM lesson's preten play is about being a little honey bee, picking pollen and keep into bee hive. SO, my little misst has turned into little cute honey bee.. haaa.. so cute.




The bee, comes with two little wings too. the teacher is so creative. This week, all children are behaving themselves in the class.. giving full concentration to sinsei. Happy lesson i must say.

Missy still need to enhance on her LM, she just refuse to arrange the cards. wonder why.

Shichida Method - Term 3

Term 3 9Oct=Dec'09)

We just started this term, so far, image play is quite interesting and most love by children. Flash memory evolve to become teacher flashing cards, read it out and children to read it loud with each card’s being flashed. Nothing specifically new introduced yet so far.

image play and pretend play not only train their motor skills by picking up things as instructed, and then they can imagine they are the character being described like chicky, octapus..

Shichida Method - Term 2

Term 2 (July-sept'09)


Missy turned two at the end of this term

This term, mummy was preggy with little brother. Thus, nothing was done for home practice for almost whole of term 2.

This term, some of the additional things done in class such as blocks, playdough, new Shichida musical, image play and flash memory.

Blocks: each child is given 5 cubes, they are suppose to arrange the blocks/cubes according to the picture, either stack on top, arrange horizontally with one block on top etc

Playdough: each child is given one tin of playdough, they are suppose to roll the dough in snake-likes shape, then outline the snake-liked dough on pear or apple.

Flash memory: teacher flashed 5 cards two times. Then each child is given 6 cards, they are suppose to pick out the card that is not flashed by teacher.

Image play: teacher will tell a story using flash cards, then child is suppose to pretend play to be certain character , etc. little chick, wearing chicky hairband and wings, picking up corns ..

Shichida Method- Term 1

I wanted to update in blog for so long, never get around to do it, so, today finally i find some time to record some of the activities we did in SM.

Term 1 (Apr -June09)

This is the sequence of activities done in class during term 1
1. Welcome song
2. Energy Ball
Child is asked to rub both hands together and make the action of gathering all energy around them and make a big ball then:
a. Shout “Whoosh” to release the Energy downwards
3. Eat the energy down into tummy and say “armh..” and rub tummy
4. Hug & say “I Love you”
5. Breathing exercise : Blow candle and do a hi-five
One feather stick onto a stick and children are asked to blow the feather as if it’s a candle.
6. Hot card
Two cards – one card is empty, one card with a blue colour circle in the middle
Children are asked to touch the card with blue circle and teacher said “It’s hot”, and then put the two cards on the table face down. Shuffle it and ask the child to pick the “hot” card.

7. Colour
Match colored cups with colour spoons (spoon can slide into the cups)
8. Opposites
Children are given a picture with one side fixed pictures, and then children are given a stack of pictures with opposite meaning of those in the picture. With Velcro to stick it on e.g. high/low, in/out
9. Photo Memory
a. Children are given one picture with 3 bowls of different colour/pattern, see for 1 min. then children are given pictures of 3 bowls and ask to arrange in the correct sequence as seen earlier
b. Children are shown a picture of a parrot for 1min. then teacher took out 2 parrots picture and ask children to choose the parrot they ‘ve seen just now. A slight different in colour
10. Linking Memory
a. Tell a story with 6 flash cards with pictures:
Parrot wearing a crown watching TV in a hotel, then a crab fall down and walk out of the door.
6 pictures are given: ParrotCrownTVHotelCrabDoor. Then children are asked to arrange the pictures in the correct story flow/sequence
11. Numbers
Children are given pages with one kernel in a page two kernel in second page etc .Children are to paste (Velcro) the puppy into the kernel. One kernel one dog
12. Songs & action Songs
Welcome songs/goodbye songs in Japanese. Some songs in mandarin / German. Some songs with actions.Sawako ( mandarine. English)

13. Finger play- Beehives
Here is the beehive, where are the bees?
Hidden away where nobody sees.
Watch and you'll see them out of the hive,

14. EPS (Extra Sensory Perception) Telepathic
Teacher said she is passing signal on what she is thinking in her head. Children are shown a picture of a tree and teacher asks what tree is this? IS it a Orange tree or a Durian tree? Children pretend to get the signal and choose the right fruit.

Teacher flashed cards of different topics in high speed.

After-thought:
Little missy just turned 18 months when we started SM. She is more on absorbing than giving result. But she is rather attentive when teacher is flashing cards and LM.

Home practice: we have done quite a fair bit of home practice on card flashing with 200 cards daily and some of the ESP games.

Missy's speech development is beyond my expectation. She can now say one, two to ten. i'm still wondering whether the "1,2,3,4,5, once i caught a fish aluve" is the source where she pick up the numbers..

she can say 3 words phrase now..and after starting her childcare, she seems to scream a lot.. this is the headache part. she will shout for things she wants. neighbour said maybe tt's the way they get attention among other children ? i dun think so la.

she pronounce her words clearer now and she understand both mandarin and english. which is the good thing which we have been trying to ensure since she was born.

how missy is growing.. she is now nearly 15kg and her 2-yo birthday is just next month. Oh gosh, her one-yo birthday is still clearly in my mind.. just like yesterday.

yesterday, when i sing, she follow me.. so i thought, maybe it's time i test her, see if she remembers the lyrics.. she is coping well in her vocab development and speech development.

The whole lyrics as below for xiao zhu, which i learnt during childhood time.

Bedtime reading: Slowly slowly slowly said the sloth

This week we have been reading Eric Carle's "Slowly slowly slowly said the sloth"
I must say LGG is good at reading books, i myself enjoy the reading so does Missy. she likes it whenever LGG starts with slowly slowly slowly.. heee..

Some short outline of the stories:
All the other animals in the rainforest want to know why the sloth is so slow, so quiet, so boring and so lazy. The sloth's reply is a good and surprising one - a philosophical statement in favour of slowness! Eric Carle is back, this time taking on this endangered creature in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.


Good book ! shall have our new book next week. Besides our weekly new book for our bedtime story, we still continue with either Good night moon, corduroy (books that missy is familiar with)

Bedtime Reading: Five Little Monkeys play hide & Seek

I borrowed this week from lib last week, thinking to have a change of bedtime story from our usual Goodnight moon. Not sure whether Missy will like this.

LGG started reading this week before we put missy to bed. hey, she loves it.. she even learn to say "Monkey" cute ! Glad she likes it.


The story is about a baby sitter playing hide and seek with 5 little monkeys:
Mama's out dancing, and Lulu, the babysitter, is in charge. The Five Little Monkeys are supposed to go to bed, but they convince Lulu there's time for just one game of hide-and-seek first . . . and then another, and another . . . until they discover the ultimate hiding place. This morning missy woke up saying.. "two three four FIVE !!!" i thought i heard wrongly.. so i asked LGG, did you hear what i just heard ? he said yes.. we were again.. have a delightful morning surprise by missy..

and she will said " hao chi" means nice to eat in mandarin today.. her one words has now evolving into two words and more.. string of words soon..

We have been reading goodnight moon/Corduroy/let's go for a bear hunt since February:

So far, Missy loves all three of them. I think it's about time we start some of the book's related activities as suggested by BFIR programmes.

Got to find some time and effort to prepare the activities.. maybe we will do the age-appropriate activities by spreading it into a week's time.

No Time for flash cards
I find it amusing that this mummy choose this title. I believe in card flashing though. But, i don't intend to flash cards ONLY in my missy's entire toddlehood. It's just part of her daily activities.

Rhymes - Months

So far, some of the counting rhymes we have done:

she is not so good a the counting rhymes yet..cos i seldom sing with her actually. shall do that more often. and maybe add in the months rhymes which i think help her remember number of days in months.. good one

and today i saw in the goosemother's nursery series.. i found th actual rhyme for r"rain rain go away". it;s a short one :

haaaa.. usually we just say "rain rain go away, come again some other day" i guess it serves the same purpose.. cos whenever raining, missy will remember this rhmyes and carrying umbrella action.. and the word "rain"

Nursery rhymes is good to help baby/toddler in developing their linguistic skill. they learn subconsciously. before you know it, they know many words .. when you recall, it's actually from the nursery rhymes we sing to her or songs..

Just like pussy cat . whenever the rhymes starts (from CD), she will tell me miao.. haaa.. cute.

My Big Girl potty

Besides physical toilet training which involve bring her to toilet on time for her pee & poo.. and keep reminding her to tell before she wants to pee and poo..

I borrowed the Potty book for Missy to have a better idea of why she needs to go to toilet/potty before she needs to let go..




She loves this book and refuse to let me return .. sigh.. but she still pee and poo on diaper/nappy..

How to Flash Cards

What are Flash Cards?

Flash Cards are cards with pictures, words, numbers, concepts or illustrations used for learning. Flash cards are simple, versatile, stimulating and fascinating for most children. The size of the card does matter, especially for earlier years because bigger cards are more attractive. For this reason our cards are “bigger” and come in 2 sizes:
Dot cards (number cards): 30cm x 21 cm
Flashcards (illustration cards): 21cm x 15 cm

How to use Flash Cards?

According to many experts, such as Makoto Shichida, from the Shichida method flashcards should be shown as fast as possible. When speed flashing, the information shown will be unconsciously absorbed by the right hemisphere of the brain, in other words, it’s a training exercise for the right brain. Learning becomes automatic, natural and rapid. This exercise can activate photographic memory.

Presenting information slowly and repetitively exercises the left brain, while flashing information to a child quickly stimulates the right brain. The right and left brain hemispheres function as opposite, complimenting each other.

Another way of showing flashcards is to use the multi-sensory method. This implies, that rather than reading aloud a word card, you can follow the word card with a picture card that represents the meaning of the picture. You can also try a sound, for example, show an elephant and make the sound of the elephant. Try this to add variety or a “fun” break to your flashcard time with your child.

Most of our flashcards are picture cards, and for each one the parent or educator says aloud the word written in the back. By speed flashing cards (showing each card for no more than 1 second) you are helping your child develop his intellectual capacity and teaching him new concepts in a way that’s both educational and fun, it doesn’t get any better!

More importantly, when flashing cards to your child, you should do it in a loving, fun environment. It is true that it only takes three minutes to flash 200 cards, but go further and bond with your child. Use this activity to create a habit of “this is my time with you” and make a routine out of it. Flash when your child is happy, enthusiastic and relaxed. You can practice some breathing and visualization exercises before starting. Do not push your child, remember this is a learning experience, it should be fun for both of you!

How to flash

1) Before showing flashcards to the child practice handling them standing before a mirror, until you become confident and cards are steady, not falling from your hands.

2) Make each presentation a positive experience. Show your love and enjoyment.

3) The child needs to be in a receptive mood. Do not attempt to have a session with a child that is tired or sick.

4) Prepare the environment by eliminating distractions such as TV, radio, stereo and phone.

5) Good lighting is essential.

6) To ensure continuing interest, always stop before the child's interest starts to faint.

7) Enthusiastically announce that it is time for flashcards. Occasionally, let them choose categories.

8) Hold the cards between 40-50 cms away from the child at the child's eye level.

9) Be lively in your presentations.

10) Compliment your child after each session. Make sure they know how wonderful he or she is doing and how much fun you're having.

DOT cards

Dot cards are large cards ( 21cm x 31cm) where numbers are represented by random dots. For example number 5 shows five dots, instead of the number 5. In the back of the card there is always the number.

Small children can perceive quantity without counting, that’s why a child can distinguish between a 54 and a 55 dots card after training with dots cards. If this ability is kept and nourished, children grow to be able to do complex mathematical equations without a calculator. If I ask you to think of number 8? What do you think? 8 or actually 8 things. The second answer is a more appropriate visual answer, as to 8, is a representation of what the number really means.

Our Dots cards are very special and unique in the market, there are no other flash cards like ours, because we allow you to customize!. That is, instead of having red dots you can choose from our menu and have a car, a princess, a sun, fish, turtle, and many others. Replace the red dot to bring variety and fun to your child. You can customize in subsets of ten. So really, when you build your own box, there might not be another one like it! It all depends on what your child likes, and this is the beauty about our cards!

Right Brain capabilities

The right brain controls the abilities to visualize images and the realization of those images physically. One thing that almost all successful people have in common is image visualization. As the left brain develops, that is, as the child grows older, it becomes harder to develop natural abilities of the right brain. If the child's brain is stuffed with knowledge, it becomes very difficult to exercise and develop the right brain. (Note: This is where Shichida has a different opinion from Glenn Doman teaching). The Shichida Method believes in not over-emphasizing on knowledge education, and that the cultivation of the child's ability to learn on his own is of utmost importance.
 Also the right brain is related to emotions, so if parents and educators fail in providing a loving and fun learning environment first, the results will be lost or may even be negative. Again, we will never stop repeating: first love, then fun and learning becomes natural.

The senses of the right brain are the ability to see, hear and sense things through waves translated into images. When these abilities are released, a person becomes capable of seeing images as motion pictures.

Right brain capabilities that every child has and that can be stimulated through exercise are:

The ability to see images in the form of motion pictures.

Photographic memory.

The ability to do complex mental calculations.

The conversion of images to words, numbers, symbols and the reverse

She recognises all face organs like eyes/nose/ears/mouth/teeth/eye brow/hair/head in both english & mandarine. she can say them in english too. She knows tummy, fingers, toes, leg and hand. she can do mirror image meaning when we ask her where is mummy's nose ? she will point at my nose instead of her own nose.*Great job*

she recognise giraff, elephant but cannot say them yet.

She calls me mummy now.. * ohh...*

Home Practises

I've started the 65 days Dot Programme with Missy since Sunday ( 3rd May 09 ). we started with:
Day 1: 1-10 cards
Day 2: 5-15 cards
Day 3: 10 -20 cards
Day 4: 15 -25 cards.

Till yesterady, Missy never show much interest to the dots cards. *sigh* but i got to be persistent and continue as it is. anyway, if the first 65 days cycle she does not show interest, hoping * really hoping* that she will give me more attention and interest on our 2nd 65 days cycle so on and so forth.

Besides our that 1 min 10 dots cards per day, i did some flash cards to her too, am still trying to speed up the flashing.. always got so clumsy even with the thumb rubber on.

She loves to see me flashing the cards though comparing to dots. which is a good thing. so far the topics i have are:
1. Numbers
2. Types of vehicles
3. Human body
4. Basic Sentence structure
5. Sentence Structure -Opposites
6. Pets

All 6 sets with 10 cards so totak of 60 cards per day. Parents are advised to flash with fast speed (0.1sec) per card, 200 cards ( 20 sets) per day. I am still trying to accumulate more topics and the topics should be retire in a month's time, we can reuse the card but not repeating the themes/title/topics.. *tough*

I still have these topics to be created into the flash cards: (plan to do yesterday but headache thus delay)

2. Musical Instruments
3. Sports


However, i have created my own flash cards for :
1. what time it is ? (clock with time)
2. Addition ( 1+x.. this can go on for many.. 2+x.. 3+x) now i limit it to 10 cards.

Somehow i find it motivated when Missy is giving me some sign of interest. *hee* Mummy too needs encouragement.. maybe a 8 sec hug from Daddy ?


Besides speed flash card which is the essense of the Shichida method, i also do some HSP games with Missy ..

HSP donw with Missy on Monday (4/5/09)
i will take our two cards, face down. and i tell Missy that im thinking of one card in my head, then i make the "to tu to tu" sound to send signal to her and touch her forehead * she loves this part*.. and then ask her to choose the card that mummy is thinking. She got it right the first time, as i try to do the second time, she seems to be distracted by the cards now instead of playing along with me.. so she got it wrong the second time. But, good try. She gets a 8 sec hug

For Monday & tuesday (4/5 & 5/5) we did the photo memory games.
I show her one picture for like 10 sec (usually i will ask her "ok ?" she will nod, then i take the picture away) then i show her two pictures with a slight difference. like one with sun one without, the rest are the same. then i will ask her "which is the picture mummy show you just now ?" Sometimes she choose the correct picture, sometimes incorrect.

This is suppose to train her sharp observation , which most young toddler has. and we just enhance it.

I plan to do some linking memory to her soon and more photo memory games.

Apart from Shichida games. i insist on arts & crafts activities with missy. hopefully on daily basis. besides having fun with all the mess, it's good to cultivate her creativity and fine/gross motor skill and we did a lot of pretend play at home (felt game/animals)

I read to missy on daily basis, yesterday we read Cordurot & LGG read "Goldilocks & the three bears" now, i will let Missy choose the book she wants us to read. e.g take out two books for her to choose. we should limit the selection and by letting to choose thier favourite can help to boost their confidence and help them in making decisions later in life.

It's fun to be able to do activities with Missy especially when she enjoys it. But lways limit each activity below 20 minutes , cos that's how long their attention span can stretch. It will get better when they get older. Our activities in class too are very fast. * right brain stimulation, everything has to be shown fast*

Now is input input input time.. hope i've given Missy lots of good input. except the part when i lost control of my temper.. *shake head*

Arts & craft

We have been doing quite a number of scribbling/drawing/colouring/finger painting/palm painting even collage in this month alone. I really think it's not bad at all as i try to make this a weekly thing for missy.. she is getting better with her hand control of the crayons/colour pencils..

To make sure she gets the access of the materials to unleash her creativity ..i always pasted a huge mahjong paper at our glass door and she just take her crayons/colour pencils and scriblle.. draw.. and only friday or sunday i will let her play with finger play with sponges and she evolve to using palm to chop on the papers..

We recently did a collage too.. which is a simple one with my help to prepare the torn magazines then she just take the paper and paste it onto the 3 balloons outline.. i will let her practise more of such craft.. good motro skill

New Words

Today im surprised when missy said "touch touch" woah.. her vocab really is expanding.. she wants to touch the toys during our visit to Kiddy palace and keep saying touch and when we passed by Levi's shop, i war the hat onto her head.. after that she keeps saying hat hat.. so i got to really watch what i say.. she is learning fast..

Language updates

Missy is able to pronounce "s" now.. Yipee ! Good job my lil girl. we have been stressing on the "s" on her words. like " say pleasssseeee" " say bussss".

hey, the hard work paid off.. now missy says " please".. with the "s" and 'bus" with the "s" too.. heee..

Book: Entertaining and Educating Babies and Toddlers

Just completed this book. A very comprehensive books with suggestions on activities from birth till 2 years plus.

I just adopted some of the activities over the weekends with Missy. one of them is the flour mixture. Not bad

Childhood Vaccination -Completed

Missy completed all her compulsary childhood vaccination last saturday. The had her 5in1 booster at 18 month-old and had fever overnight. that was the first fever she gets from all her jabs.

She had all her optional jabs too except Hep A which we shall take it later before she is 2 yo.

Missy is going to her weekend enrichment this weekend. so with all her jabs taken. Im more relax. heee.

The speed Missy picking up new words now is beyond our expectation. She can imitate the sound prety well now. 18 th month old really is a milestone

Most of the words she pick up from our daily reading of Eric Carle book. The first words and animals.

Somehow, i still don't have much liking for Eric carle book. not as fun. We still read Let's go for a bear hunt & Goodnigh Moon.

There are some other words that Misys understands but unable to pronounce such as caterpillar (she is able to say pillar only) and rooster (she can point at the picture but not able to pronounce). It's ok as as we go along, she will pick it up. Shall record when she is able to add "s" into her vocab.

Dancing VCD - Hi-Five

Got the Hi-Five VCD for some time during expo. played once to missy when she is 13 months old or so, but she is not so interested. She prefer baby brainy then.

Recently, i play the VCD to her again, she just sit in front of the TV almost the whole VCD. haaa.. magic of movements to toddler.

The dancing is simple and the tune is catchy.. i even can memorise the tunes in my head now..

Missy is trying out some of the moves but still not that good. a bit stiff.. geess.. maybe like her mummy. no talent in dancing ? but she shake better than me, that's for sure :)

Eric Carle Books

Decided to introduce Eric Carles' book to Missy now. We have been reading Good night moon (she pick up words like night night, mouse, kittens, balloon (she used to call balloons ball)), We're going on a bear hunt ( she picks up words like tip-toe, bear and the excitement of running away from bear), corduroy ( she picks up words like bear, hug, bed )

eric carle's books are very popular. but i personally (adult's view) don't find it interesting esp the hungry caterpillar. but i read many reviews. and i guess i should try to introduce his books to missy to see if she likes it.

Raising Babies - Should Under Threes Go To Nursery?

Im interested to read this book recommended by one SAHM.

Shall get from library.

If environment allow, i would not want my missy to go to nursery that early. but on the other hand, i want her to socialise and learn things from playgroup. Too bad im no a SAHM, and i dont think i can be anyway. so, i guess in Spore, we will all go to playgroup/nursery or even pre-nursery due to most of family with both parenst working.

Shall find out more about what is discussed in this book though.

After-tots:
well. the books drag a lot.. the only message i get is that when in childcare it's their duty to look after our children but not their duty to shower our child with love. one example the book gives: you don't expect the childcare giver to sing songs lovingly to your child during diaper changing. But, mother or granny will do that.

i do agree on the above, other than that, i'm open to children mixing around, socialing and learning in groups. this book do not encourage that. maybe it's how the parents see the childcare. You don't reply 100% on them to educate/care/love your child.. you should use childcare as a medium to pick up new skills (social/learning) while you shower your child with loves at home..

Development @ 17th months old

Missy is 17th months old now. she has great improvement in speech compare to last month.

New words she can say:
1. woo woo aka walk walk
whenever she wants to come down to walk on her own, she will point to the floor and said woo woo.. and i have to always correct her walk. walk. then she will say woo. woo. * eyes rolling *

2. shoo aka Shoes
She will point at the shoes rack at balcony for us to take her shoes and wear shoes when she is ready to go out from home.

3. rain aka rain
The pronunciation is not so accurate but she manage to say it which we understand she means rain. all thanks to the rhymes "rain rain go away "

4. mi mi aka mummy
she still refuse to call me. she knows im her mummy, but when ask to call mummy, she the most say mi mi.

5. Gong gong aka her grandpa or any old man
last time she used to say gum gum. now she pronounce it correctly and she call gong gong whenever she see old man in pictures/tv or even neighbour.

6. o o aka sleeping
she will say o o when she wants to sleep or she wants to drink milk cos we usually bring her to bed before she drink milk

7. woof woof aka dog
she still say woof woof even i keep correcting her to call dog not call woof woof

8. mao mao aka cat
maybe cos we introduce cat by saying "miao miao" so now she stuck to mao mao..shall correct her.

9. bear bear aka her stuffed bear
this is the most accurate she can say. haaa

10. you aka water
we still scrathcing head why she wants water and say you. we never teach her water is you. *fainted* correcting her whenever she ask for water and say you.


will teach her more words using three period lesson method. she knows many things but cant say it out yet.

Im still reading her Goodnight Moon, Corduroy & we're going on bear hunt ! she loves these stories.

Phonics

I bought the phonics Ants on the Apple songs and CD last year from the online Montessoru shop. Play for Missy but she does not seem to stay on for the whole CD. usually she is interested only for the first few alphabets with me and the pictures in the book came along with the CD.

Jenny feedback to me that the CD works for her son who is turning 4 this year. So i guess must be effective ?

thus, instead of playing the CD. i just sing the tune to her. This is much more effective actually.the tune is "Skip to my Lou"

i introduce two alphabets first. so not to confuse her at this stage.

when i sing "a" she will follow with "a a a" and when i ask her "a" if the sound of ? she will sometimes reply with "A"

when i sing balls are bouncing .. she will " b b b".. and she will say "b" is the sound of "B"

but sometimes she mixed up.. when i ask her "a" is the sound of ? she will reply "B".. haaa.. anyway, we are having fun with the songs instead. while learning without she knowing it.

BFIR - after-tot

I've been reading the three BFIR books to Missy since last friday. the result is rearding.

Missy is able to say night night whenever i read the goodnight moon to her. She will do a hug hug with me on the last page of corduroy. that's when lisa becomes corduroy's friend and gave him a hug. Missy enjoys the bear hunt adventures in we're going on a bear hunt. she will points at the bear when we found the bear at the cave.

Shall continue to read to her so that i can continue with the rest of the activities when she is older.

I believe early education helps to stimulate toddler's mind !

Update on 20th Feb 09
One unexpected finding froms goodnight moon. all pictures have a mouse,the position keep changing in all coloured pages. i somehow noticed that. so i ask missy to look for the mouse whenever i flip to the coloured pages. "Where is the mouse ?" she will search for the mouse in the page and happily point at the mouse, when she foudn it to me ! good stimulation right ? heee.

Raisins transfer game

Wanting to play this game for sometimes, but my initial plan is to use beans, but beans is not that safe. since i have many packets of raisins at home, thus, the idea to let my girl have a new game.

This raisin transfer game is to train my girl to follow instructions. i gave her three small bowl of different colours. I place all the raisins into the red bowl. i then show her how i transfer the raisins from red bowl to yellow bowl then to blue bowl. then, i thought maybe three bowl /thre colour might be too overwhelming. i then change my plan to just red & yellow bowl.

I demonstrated wih instructions in words, missy just cant wait to get started. she really follow what i did by transferring the raisins one by one from red bowl to yellow bowl. *proud of her*

of course, i dont expect everything to be so perfect, once she almost completed, she started her usual curiousity again. she will press the raisins, flatten it, then put into her mouth, spit it out.. then take it and put into the bowl again.. repeatedly.

Shall revisit this game.

Sponge in the water

I've got these sponges ages ago. my aim is to do some arts with missy. But, it's too early to start with water colour. she is now using colour pencils and crayons at this stage.

i started introducing sponge to missy is to let her have some sensorial stimulation as it has two different texture, one is rough (like sand paper) and another side is soft and spongy. she likes to play with these sponges with different colours, she will take the sponge to scrub on paper or floor.

since recently, i noticed missy show minimum interest with her toys, so i let her play the sponges in a basin of water.. let her see how the sponge become full with water and when i press the sponge, the water just leak out and the sponge can be soaked with water again..

i let her try on her own, she simply thrilled with it and so excited abt it. she press the sponge, put it again into the basin to soak with water, repeatingly.

of course, it wet the floor, which i well prepared by placing a mat below the basin.

a simple/cheap/fun game to engage with our litle ones which stimulate her senses and refine her fine motor skill

Development - Flash Cards

Missy today surprised me by responding positively to my teaching using Montessori three period lesson.

The basic of Three period lessons:
Stage 1
take 3 objects. Place one of the objects in front of child and say its name clearly. Do the same for each of the other two objects.

Stage 2
Place all thees objects together and ask for one of them by name. Once your child has identified the object you want, mix all three up together and ask for another one. repeat this until she is able to identify the objects swiftly when you ask for them.

Stage 3
Point to one of the objects and ask child if she knows its name

I've been flashing her cardsfor months now.. usually i just mention the name of the cards and she just look at them.. after i decided to adopt the three period lesson, i will use lesser cards for the lesson.. like "a" for Apple ,"b" for ball, "c" for cat, "d" for dog.. i keep repeating these cards and sometimes i will say apple "arm" crunchy.. ball bouncing..cat..miao miao.. dog woof woof..

today, when i name the card.. say show mummy the apple.. she will search through the cards and point the apple then take the card out. no joke.. cos initially i put the apple within her sight.. she manage to take it.. then i hide the apple card underneath other cards, she too manage to find the correct card.. she can do the same for ball, cat, dog, sun (as i always sing you are my sunshine when i flash "s' for sun), and rabbit, as i always make the rabbit ears when i flash "r" for rabbit.

Im so proud of my little missy. she is barely 15th going to 16th month old. amazing huh !

With that, i have completed stage 1 & 2. Will continue to thrive for stage 3. she is still not so verbal yet, she understands more things than she can say.

as i flash the cards for eyes, nose, ear , mouth, fingers, face, cheek,now she can touch each of the above correctly in english and also in mandarin.. *clap clap clap*

Then, action words like 'blow', 'drink, 'brush' she knows these very well as i've done this months back..

so, mummy got to work harder to create more cards with action words for her..

Felt good when my effort sees result ! Ganbate my swetie girl !

Development : 15th month going to 16th month-old

Missy will be 16th month this saturday. how my girl has grown since the day she was born.. my small little cherub..love her so much..

joting down her development since my memory is still fresh:

what she can do now:

a. speech
she can call papa, popo, kakak, gong gong, sometimes uncle.. and she knows im her mummy but she just refuse to call me mummy but call me mama or ah ma when she wants me to cuddle her..and she said baobao when want us to carry her

she says mummum for eating, says mm mm for passting motion and say mm mm after she pee..*shake head*, she says apple as we give her apple almost everyday either juice or the apple itself. she knows fish as we have fish tank at home where the fishes are swimming happily, she knows clock as we always point to her the clock, she knows fan, she will point at these when we mention it. she know mirror and she knows what to do with comb, and shoes.

most of the things she wants she will nod nod nod and we have to guess .. ok she want me to open this bag.. if we do the wrong thing she will complaint. haaa

b. food.
she eats more solid, no more grinding required. she eat chicken strips, fish(mostly salmon).. we have yet to introduce pork into her daily porridge. she eat multigrain rice too. she knows how to eat bee hoon in small portion. she drink apple juice and she is leaning to eat yogurt, she likes cheese those in pieces not in cubes.

c. emotion
she is however a girl. she loves her piglet and teddy bear. she likes bright colour cuddle bear.. her mr. bin bear she doesn't really like compare to the pink ones.. she will cuddle her bear and kiss them emotionally. like love the bears so much.. she will carry them and walk about.

she will cry as in complaint if we never meet her wishes, like if she wants us to carry, but we choose to ignore, she will complaint by crying. but once we carry her up, she will be happy. that;s how mischievious she is now.

d. movement
She walks very steadily now. but, she tends to run instead of slow walk, so sometimes still will fall.*eyes rolling*

she know when we tell her to sit down to wear shoes. she can sit on low chair on her own now. she knows how to comb her hair.. she can self-feed. *messing still* she knows how to drink from straw and cup. she knows when she wants to drink milk * if never give her asap, she will complaint too* she knows neighbour is call popo and uncle.. she knows butterfly *the one i hang outside our corridoor*

It's amazing how much she has pick up since.. she imitates us greatly nowadays.

My next step is to introduce her alphabets.. she knows those rhymes that i've taught her. i on the ants on the apple CD to her on weekends. so. it;s time to introduce "A" to her.. she will say "a a a" when i sing "ants on the apples a a a "..

it's really fun to homeschool kids on part time basis.. hee.e. i wont be able to take it if it's full time.. but now i enjoy educating my girl..

BB's teething update - 14th/15th/16th teeth

more coming up.. 16 teeth now.. *smile*

we have been brushing teeth (without toothpaste )with missy since she has 4 teeth. hopefully she will make it a habit.
